Visit to Drumshanbo Library
We were very lucky to be invited to Drumshanbo Library for a workshop with the author Alan Nolan. He was very funny and had us laughing throughout our visit there. We listened to an excerpt from his new book Sam Hannigan’s Woof Week and he even taught us how to draw one of the main characters from another of his books.
The Marrog by R.C Scriven
We thoroughly enjoyed learning our first poem of the year called The Marrog and we had great fun creating our very own ‘Class Marrog’. We used our imagination and creativity, whilst remembering the details of the Marrog in the poem to develop and construct our own. Lots of team spirit, cooperation, perseverance and patience was needed. We are very proud of our ‘Class Marrog’!!
Place Value
We really enjoyed working in pairs with concrete materials to better understand the place value of numbers and digits up to 1,000. We became increasingly confident working with HTU, renaming tens to hundreds and units to ten, reading numbers in the standard, expanded and word form.
We made bridges.
Our St. Patrick’s Day board.
Tin-whistle Practice.
Our monasteries and round towers.
Our Christmas tree. It is made out of stars we decorated.
1916 Celebrations
We are learning all about 1916 in class. We looked at loads of pictures from that time, especially children and how the people lived. We decided to try and dress up like children of the time. We talked about what school might have been like. We went up to Aras Padraig to take some photos…
In the classroom…
Class photo. Putting turf in the fire!!
Class photo at teacher’s table. Some children at work.

THE PIED PIPER – 3rd class school play
Our class play this year was The Pied Piper. We worked really hard learning our lines, getting our costumes ready and finding props. Thank you to everyone who helped us; Miss McLoughlin, Mrs Cox and Miss Keogh. Here are some pictures of our characters…
The Pied Piper and Mr Mayor. Mr Brumhandle and some children.
The children of Hamelin. Some citizens of Hamelin.
The army of cheeky rats and the Big Cheese (their leader).
Some of our citizens.. The Brant and Amstel families.
FELTING CraftEd Project
Third class were involved in the CraftEd project this year. We were working with Susan Basler who is a felt artist. Here are some pictures of us creating our felt projects.
Once we had learnt how to make a piece of felt, we decided to make Ireland themed flags for the 1916 commemorations. Susan helped us to back them onto a black fabric backdrop. We were really happy with our finished product.
With the felt we had left over, we made some colourful shamrocks, Mother’s Day cards with felt hearts and some bracelets and necklaces which we decorated with gems and buttons. There wasn’t a scrap of felt left over!
We went to the Bush Hotel to present our felt work. There were five other schools there that worked on different crafts.
We had a great day, well done to the girls (Laoise, Ella Casey, Grace and Andrea) who talked about the project on behalf of the class.

Aoife came to speak to us today about Water Safety. It was very informative. We had the opportunity to use water saftey equipment and discussed what to do in the event of an emergency. Each of us received a certificate for completing ‘Land Paws 2’

We have learned about bridges and the types of bridges all around the world. As part of our SESE project we got engineering and made our own. What do you think? They had to support a 100g weight and each group succeeded. Well done 🙂

We had great fun learning about static electricity. When things, like our balloons, have static electricity they stick-see what materials we experimented with 🙂

PIRATES vs MERMAIDS
Our School Play was performed this week. A lot of practice and effort went into the performance and we are very proud of our production! Don’t we look great 🙂
And not forgetting our parrot…Squawk Squawk!!!
Third Class have been learning about Fractions this month. We know all about halves, quarters, eighths, fifths and tenths!
Merry Christmas, everyone.
We had great fun decorating the windows in the school. Hope you remembered to check them out.
